Today in Nerd History: it’s National Quark Day

Now over here at Howste, we had a really nice educational post planned talking about Quarks and Leptons…just to learn…National Quark Day is all about Cheese?!?!?

Quark or Quard is a kind of Curd Cheese made from sour milk and we are over here THINKING THIS IS THE PERFECT NERD HOLIDAY BUT NO! It’s for weird cheese.

So you get the educational post about Quarks.

They are a fundamental part of matter. Quarks come together to form Hadrons (the most stable forms of which are Protons and Neutrons) All forms of matter contain them. They are never found alone, they always are found within hadrons.

Quarks come in 6 forms. Up, Down, Strange, Charm, Top, and Bottom. These are known as Flavors of quarks. Up and Down Quarks have the lowest mass and heavier Quarks rapidly lower their mass with Particle Decay and thats why Up and Down Quarks are the most common in the universe.

How’s that for a nice Wednesday particle physics lesson? Plus hey, Quarks are pretty neat!
