On May 27, 2003, Matt Mullenweg announced the availability of the first version of WordPress. The post editor looked like this! At the time, the goal of creating WordPress was to utilize open source communities to create a platform for blogging without all the additional licensing terms used by other blogging sites. 

WordPress is driven by a community of dedicated developers, users, and supporters. It continues to be free because at its core, it is about software freedom.
